Old Farm House

The village of Lower Hardres near Canterbury is featured in an article in the Kentish Gazette by Arnold Bosworth. This broadsheet was a souvenir issue (the Kentish Gazette's 250th year anniversary issue, October 16 1717 - October 20 1967). Arnold Bosworth's article tells of a rather extraordinary poltergeist haunting the Old Farm House in the village. While researching his article, Arnold Bosworth was accompanied by his terrier dog, Sandy, and during their walk they encountered another dog, a Jack Russell. The Jack Russell was reluctant to allow them to pass his garden, so naturally there was a heated exchange between the two animals. A woman, noted by Mr Bosworth as a 'shapely and beautiful' young lady, rushed from the house in search of her pet. She and Mr Bosworth began chatting and the young woman introduced Mr Bosworth to a Mr and Mrs Baker White, who, she said, would be better qualified than she to describe this particular haunting.

The Old Farm House was, they claimed, haunted by a poltergeist and its favourite room was one of the bedrooms used as a spare for visitors. Mrs Baker White told Mr Bosworth that the ghost was of a most exasperating kind — it didn't waste its time on the usual poltergeist tricks like moving things around. Instead, it deposited water in shoes left lying about by visitors to the house. On one occasion, a pool of water even appeared on someone's eiderdown. Mrs Baker White insisted that the roof had been thoroughly checked for leaks and at the time of poltergeist activity, the door had been closed.
