The one-time leader of the Liberal Party, Jeremy Thorpe, was on holiday at Trethevy in North Cornwall, during his university days.
At a dinner party at the Old Priory, Mr Thorpe went to the bathroom, noticing a particularly strange stone slab that broke up the otherwise ordinary room.
As he came out of the bathroom and was walking back along the passage to go back downstairs he noticed a monk in a brown habit going into the bathroom. The monk ignored Mr Thorpe’s ‘Good evening’.
On asking the host and hostess who the monk was he was told that it was the prior and that he had ‘lived’ at the priory for several hundred years. He had apparently been murdered there and laid out on the slab that was now part of the bathroom; although he was seen frequently he had never been in any way Unpleasant to guests.
