Woburn Abbey

After being invited by the Duke of Bedford to judge a Dairy Queen competition at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire, the jazz musician Acker Bilk was invited to stay the night. Acker Bilk and the duke’s son, the Marquis of Tavistock, sat up until around four in the morning talking about music before retiring. They walked together down the corridors to the Red Room, where Acker Bilk was to sleep, and stood outside finishing their conversation. As they were talking the outside doors of the double set of doors to the Red Room began to open on their own. Tavistock took no notice of this and eventually Acker Bilk had to point it out to him. Apparently Tavistock casually replied, ‘Oh, don’t bother about that. It’s just a ghost. He often wanders around. I think we have seven in all at the Abbey.’ Newstead Abbey | Beauchief | Berkshire | Dorset | England | Glastonbury | Melrose | Woburn |
