At the sixteenth-century Chequers Inn in Bickley, there have been claims that the famous highwayman DickTurpin frequently'visits'. He goes via some back stairs and disappears into his hiding place in one of the bedrooms.Various accounts have the ghost wearing green velvet and a plumed hat. One customer, who was not aware of the claims of a haunting, reported seeing the man in green velvet in one of the rooms, sitting at a table and writing with a quill pen. Later, when she returned to the room, there was no one there.
Other guests have reported sightings ot ladies in eighteenth-century costume. Other claims have been:
