The battle of Edgehill in Warwickshire was the first major battle of the English Civil War in 1642, involving 14,000 men in combat. Shortly after it took place, on four successive weekend nights, many visitors to the battlefield were able to see the event ‘replay’ itself. As described in a pamphlet published at the time, ‘A great wonder in heaven shewing the late apparitions and prodigious noyse of war and battels, seen on Edge-Hill, neere Keinton, in Northamptonshire 1642.’ The king, Charles I, sent out some notables to witness this event and they swore statements that they had done so.
