Thornhill Colliery

When an airdoor was installed at Thornhill Colliery, miners who were in the vicinity were often surprised to hear what sounded like heavy footsteps passing overhead. They looked for numerous solutions as to the cause of the noises, but remained unsure. Many of the miners who had heard the sound likened it to a group of people wearing wooden clogs, walking on the 'ceiling' above them. Some time later it was discovered that the site of the new airdoor was directly underneath a very old roadway, which would once have been on one of the earliest workings in the colliery. Early colliers in heavy wooden-soled workboots would have walked this way at the beginning and end of every shift. Is it possible that the modern colliers could have heard noises from the past?
