Markham Colliery

Ron Webster was a chesterfield based miner for many years and had an experience while underground at Chesterfields Markham Colliery which remains clear in his memory to this day.

Many years ago when pit ponies were still in use for coal transportation they were stabled in underground stalls and tended to by a hostler who fed and watered them.Markhams osler was a man named Archie after many years service died suddenely in the stables.Ron Webster was underground in an area close to the stables shortly after Archies death when he looked towards the ponies and noticed a figure feeding them and a closer look revealed that it was Archie.

Markham Colliery was also reputedly haunted by the ghost of a deputy who always appeared in a flooded area of the mine where drainage pumps needed to be activated at regular intervals sightings of the phantom deputy standing in a cornerr and watching them at work were common.Barnsley | Barnsley | Doncaster | Floughton | Glasshoughton | Grimethorpe | Nottinghamshire | Thornhill | West Yorkshire |
