Kellingley Colliery

Level Seventeen of this West Yorkshire colliery was long believed to be haunted, although nobody ever identified the ghost. The following tale was recounted by a colleague of the man it involved.

In the mid-1980's, three miners were underground towards the end of a shift, one of them being on Level Seventeen on his own. This gentleman noticed a stranger sitting in a particular gate, and although he was not aware that any extra staff were underground at that time, he approached him for a chat. For almost half an hour the pair were engaged in conversation, when it came to the end of the shift and the first miner left to get transport back to the pit top. Noticing that only himself and two colleagues were present, he asked the operator to wait for the fourth man who was still on Level Seventeen. He was assured that nobody else was underground, only the three of them. The following day, the frightened man did not return to work!
