The Ghost Of Calder Island

In the tenth century goods were transported from the east coast of England, from Goole up the river calder to Wakefield. The small river boats used to deliver their cargos to calder island. Calder island is situated on Denby Dale Road below the park on the way to m1.There is now a small industrial park built on calder island. After the cargos were delivered it was the practise to load these goods on to carts which were pulled by oxen into Wakefield town.Women and local children drove the oxon carts.

On one cold winters day the ox cart was loaded as had happened many times before, but before the oxen could get the cart turned around to head for the town ,there was a bad accident and the cart turned over, spilling ints cargo and trapping a ten year old boy under it .The young boy died. On calder island today there is a car showroom and a health and fitness center and fish and chip restraunt.

The spirit of the young boy can be heared regularlyin the dead of night playing with the punch bagson the upper floor of the health fitness center. Alot of sightings have been made about the young boy the staff has even gave him a name Albert.
