Aspley

In May 1987 the Costello family fled from their council house in Aspley, Nottingham, after a series of very disturbing events suggesting a poltergeist. The Costellos, John, 52, his wife Helen, 51, and their daughters Sharon, 20, Suzie, 18, and Rosie, 13, moved into the house after it had been specially adapted so that Sharon, severely disabled with autism, could live with them.

One day in February 1987, when they returned from an outing, they heard the sound of giant 'heart beats' which brought Sharon to her knees. She was in such a state she had to be taken to hospital. Later, there was mournful music, apparently from an electric organ that had been disconnected, and a spirited solo on a three-stringed child's guitar. Windows were smashed, plugs pulled out, while furniture and Sharon's bedclothes moved restlessly around.

Spiritualist Betty Henswell said there were five 'ghosts' in the house. Evidence was read in court from Jack Yates, 64, a retired solicitor's clerk from Yorkshire, who agreed to sleep on the sofa in the living room one night to check their story.

The fight started to go on and off, and then he felt a force lift him about a foot in the air. This seemed to last for several minutes. He had to use all his strength to come down again. Then he saw a typewriter start to move as if invisible fingers were pressing the keys. The paper started scrunching itself up. On examination, he found AH AH [or ah, ah??? typed right across it. He also heard scratchings on his bedclothes and strange knockings in the air. Police and social workers witnessed some weirdness, and a priest came to give an exorcism.

When he sprinkled holy water on the stairs, it was chucked back at him. The events continued with the new tenants, James Cotterill, 36, his wife Sandra and their three children.
