Pretty Beryl Gladwin doesn't get much sleep. Between 4 and 6am, three mornings a week, she is visited by a ghost wearing miner's boots. Her life is made such a misery that her parents are applying for a new home for themselves and their seven children. Beryl, 18, tried sleeping with her parents, but the amorous spook was not deterred. '
First it tugs at the bedclothes and then I feel it get next to me in the bed. It holds my hand and starts kissing me and biting my neck.' The haunting began about the end of February 1975, and after a couple of frightening weeks, the family called in a clairvoyant, Simon Alexander.
Mr Alexander kept a vigil at one of the regular trysting times, and felt a malevolent presence outside the room. 'It tried to make me leave by making me feel ill. I had to fight hard to stay.
Then it materialized in the room. It was trying to dodge me and was difficult to get into focus. I could see pit boots clearly, and miner's baggy herringbone trousers held up by a wide belt with a big buckle. It tried to get in with Beryl and kiss her.
She was trembling with fear.'
He went on: 'I believe it's the ghost of a miner called Dexter who used to live in the house. He had 12 children of his own, and I'm certain he will make love to Beryl unless something is done soon.' The Gladwins, as seems to be a pattern in council-house hauntings, had only moved into the house six months previously. The church seems unhurried about who gets laid first. The vicar of Worksop, conducting his own
investigation, said an exorcism might be a possibility.
Some time after the story appeared, the People carried a little note tucked away where few would see it. It read: 'Mr George Dexter, of 31 Windmill Lane Worksop, states that the story we published on March 9 headed "The Ghost that Left Love Bites" was a slur on his dead brother. There was no such intention and we are sorry if the report caused embarrassment to the Dexter family.'
Exclusive Story By The Lady Herself
This story goes back 34 years when Beryl was 18 years old and living with her parents and brothers and sisters.
Beryl’s mum looked at the council house while it was being refurbished because it had 4 bedrooms and she had a large family. She pestered the council for the house until eventually they offered it to her.
After moving in and getting settled it was about six months later when things started to happen.
Beryl has had certain psychic abilities from a young age and can sense things, spirits, a presence or whatever you like to call them, although it’s a gift she would rather live without. On one particular night she sensed a presence while lying in bed and felt it touch he arms as if to hold her down. She was terrified and screamed until her mother came into the bedroom to comfort her and tell her she was having a bad dream. Beryl tried to persuade her that it was not a dream, but with things of this sort it is hard for people to accept without further proof. On a separate occasion, a couple of nights after, the same thing happened. Then Beryl swapped bedrooms but it still carried on happening and by this time her parents knew that there was more to it than just a bad dream and started to take it seriously.
The experience Beryl had was sensing a presence pulling at the sheets, holding her down by her arms and not being able to move. She could feel the grip of its hands on her arms but could not see any figure of any kind, just the feeling of touch.
This went on for several weeks, not every day but on a regular basis. The rest of the family experienced various happenings such as heavy breathing, lights going on and off for no apparent reason, footsteps up and down the stairs, doors opening and closing. These things happened at various times all through the day and night.
Various reporters came to the house and on one occasion a reporter, a photographer and a psychic were in the room with Beryl when the presence came and the reporter and the photographer became ill and had to leave the room, Beryl seemed to think that it made them ill to force them out of the room.
Beryl told them where the presence was when it was felt by her on the other side of the door. And could tell them where it was anywhere in the house.
A local vicar came after a while and blessed the house then after about 2 weeks it stopped. The house is still the family home for the mother and some of her family and no more spiritual problems have occurred since.
The Spirit never manifested itself in any form that could be seen and neither Beryl nor any of her family made any reference to the previous owner Mr Dexter. At that particular time they did not even know who the previous owner was.
This is what really happened as told by Beryl to me, her husband and has been checked by Beryl before sending it to you.
