Killiecrankie

The Battle of Killiecrankie took place in 1689 between the Jacobites and the forces of William III under the leadership of General Hugh Mackay. The site of the battle is nearly three miles northwest of Pitlochry, in Perthshire. The Jacobites were victorious, but their leader, Viscount John Graham of Claverhouse, known as Bonnie Dundee, was killed in the fray. In spite of the victorious outcome of the battle for the Jacobite forces, the death of Dundee was a tragic blow to their cause.

Nowadays there is a visitor centre at the battle site, which is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, and Killiecrankie is a popular venue for school parties on histoiy trips and for touris from all over the world.

Different experiences are associated with the battle site, oo people have reported seeing an eerie red glow. Some claim to n seen groups of soldiers marching as if into battle.

Others have ported seeing a ghostly version of the battle itself, or at least a p of it. One particular story tells of a woman seeing the bodies ° eral dead English officers around her feet as she picnicked at crankie.
