Manifestation

There are quite a few stories told of ghostly vehicles that have been witnessed the width and breadth of Scotland, and some have been included elsewhere in this book. None is quite as strange, however, as the story of a ghostly vehicle that changed with the times. The story originates in the Isle of Skye, where it is said that for many years the sound of galloping hooves and the clatter of wooden cart wheels would herald the arrival of a phantom horse-driven carriage to a house in a remote part of the island. Some time after the invention of the motor car, the occupants of the house realised that they had not heard the coach and horses for some time.

Then, one night, they heard another sound. Unmistakably, it was that of a motor car. The house was in an isolated spot and vehicles were few, so when the car's engine seemed to stop, the occupants of the house looked out of the window to see who had come to call on them.

There was no one and nothing to be seen. Puzzled and a little disappointed, everybody sat down again. Then a few seconds later, they heard the car engine start up again. The noise began to fade, as if the car was driving away. But no matter how hard the people in the house peered into the darkness, no one could see anything.
