The Century Cinema was the scene of curious and unexplained happenings a few years ago, when sounds of shuffling feet were heard by some of the cinema staff, including the manager, apparently coming from the empty stage.

When some of them, with three local reporters, held a midnight watch in the silent cinema they all heard the mysterious shuffling noise on three occasions from the right-hand side of the stage.

The noises, which could not be traced to mice or any other rodent, may have had some connection with the disappearance of a workman who helped to build the cinema some forty years ago.

His lunch-bag and hat were found hanging on a nail near the part of the building which is now the stage and his wages were never collected.

He seems to have disappeared without trace and some people have wondered whether something happened to him and whether the ghostly shuffling footsteps that are heard from time to time are his.
