Henley-on-Thames

n 1969 playwright Joan Morgan's play, 'The Hanging Wood', based on the story of a local girl, Mary Blandy, who was hanged at Oxford in 1752 for poisoning her father, was produced here.

As soon as rehearsals began 'unusual incidents' took place. A large mirror 'jumped' off a wall, lights were switched on and off, doors were mysteriously opened and closed.

A figure of a girl was reported at the back of the theatre watching the performances, although she was never seen to enter or leave the building.

Whenever someone decided to discover who the girl was, the figure disappeared. Once, when some members of the cast were discussing Mary Blandy, a cup jumped about six inches off a table and smashed on to the floor.

Miss Morgan said that some years previously, when the trial of Mary Blandy was being re-enacted at Henley Town Hall, a similar unexplained figure was seen by a number of people, including herself.
