r Robert Walpole, (1676-1745) first Earl of Orford, statesman and perhaps the first effective Prime Minister of England, built the magnificent Houghton Hall on the site of his old ancestral home.

But it is his sister, Dorothy Walpole, whose ghost, dressed in a brown brocade dress, is reputed to haunt the house.

She probably spent the happiest days of her life here and her ghost is said to have appeared to the Prince Regent when he was occupying the State Bedroom, causing him to request a different room for the rest of his stay.
