A haunting known as 'the college mystery' concerns a mulberry tree in the Fellows' Garden, planted by Milton where, on certain nights of the full moon, a tall, elderly, stooping figure is seen at midnight. It is thought to be the ghost of Christopher Round who murdered another Fellow and lived in repentance for forty years. The figure walks in the solitude of the garden with his hands behind his back; occasionally a heavy and ponderous step, for which no explanation has ever been discovered, is heard mounting the staircase of the college to the first floor.Jacobean Mansion |
