In 1968, the old dower house at Killackee was bought by the artist, Margaret O'Brien, and her husband, Nicholas. There was much that needed doing to the house, and they had a team of workmen engaged on renovation and redecoration. When the workmen began to complain of a strange presence in the house - a big, black cat - Mrs O'Brien dismissed the story. But one day she saw it herself, inside the house when all doors to the outside were locked - a huge, jet-black cat, about as big as a medium-sized dog. The beast vanished, but soon afterwards one of the workmen, Thomas McAssey, at work in a room by himself, felt the air suddenly grow cold. He looked around but saw nothing. From beyond the open door, however, came a sound of low and threatening growls. Then a dark figure appeared in the doorway. He spoke to it, but a growl was the only answer. Mrs O'Brien had the house exorcised, which appeared to get rid of the cat-spirit, though other manifestations were said to trouble the place still. Leeds Castle | Essex | New York | Tiree |
