Wilton Castle, in southeastern Ireland, was destroyed by fire during the War of Independence. It had been the home of the Anglo-Irish Alcock family since the 17th century. It had a famous ghost in the form of Harry Alcock, head of the family, who died in 1840. On the anniversary of his death, it was said that he could be seen at sunset, driving slowly away from the castle gate in a ghostly carriage. Crowds would gather to watch out for the spectacle. A local blacksmith even claimed to have talked to the landlord's spectre.
Another unquiet spirit inhabited the same neighbourhood, that of Archibald Jacob, a friend of the Alcocks. In the uprising of 1798, Jacob was prominent among those who tortured anyone thought to have information about the rebellion. He died in 1836, by a fall from his horse, and his ghost haunted the roadside, liable to terrify late-night passers-by. On one occasion, when a priest was called to the castle to carry out an exorcism, the figure of Jacob was seen to appear in the fireplace, then vanish again in a cloud of smoke.
