The Pannanich Wells Hotel

Ballater is a beautiful town in Deeside, a spa town frequented in Victorian times by the rich and influential, who sought to benefit their health by taking the waters there. The Pannanich Wells Hotel in the town dates from the middle of the 18th century and was most favourably mentioned by Her Royal Majesty Queen Victoria in the journal that she kept.

As well as having the honour of being visited by Queen Victoria, the Pannanich Wells Hotel has another claim to fame. It is the haunt of a 'grey lady', the ghost of an elegant young woman dressed in a grey blouse and a long grey skirt. The grey lady has been seen both in and around the building by various people. Sometimes the ghost cannot be seen, but instead people have heard noises such as doors opening and closing without apparent reason. The grey lady is not a ghost that causes great alarm, and indeed she is regarded with a certain amount of affection by those who are familiar with the hotel.
