Ferry Boat Inn

The Ferry Boat Inn is many centuries old, perhaps over 1,000 years, and stands beside the River Ouse at Holywell. It is one of several that lay claim to being the oldest in England. The story goes that centuries ago Juliet Tewsley was so distraught when her relationship with a local man broke up that she hanged herself. Not surprisingly, details after more than 1,000 years are sketchy but it is said that she was buried beside the river and her grave marked by a stone. When, some time later, the inn was built, the stone is said to have been incorporated into the bar room floor. She is said to have killed herself on 17 March and makes her presence known on this date.

However, no positive siting has been made for several decades. At other times, unexplained noises can be heard from different places around the inn and these are put down to her ghost. It is quite possible that this ghost story is the result of a marketing ploy by successive landlords of the Ferry Boat Inn! Old gravestones are often used as building materials and this might have given rise to stories told late at night by revellers to amuse each other.

The management certainly do not keep Juliet a secret, and there are several framed press clippings referring to her on the pub's walls! One of the restaurants is even named after her! There have been investigations held on the anniversary of her suicide but she has not shown herself on these occasions. On one such occasion, in 1954, so many people turned up that the police had to be called to keep order! Beer sales were probably quite good that night!
