Mr and Mrs Parker were out shopping in Hereford when they were hailed by an old friend. He was 80 years old and now quite frail but had once been a captain in the armed forces. Since there was a chill wind blowing, Mrs Parker suggested that they meet a little later in a local coffee shop. Mr and Mrs Parker waited for some time at the allotted time in the coffee shop but the captain did not arrive. They assumed that he had forgotten but sent him a note anyway, apologising, just in case he had arrived after they had left. They suggested that they meet up at another time.
They received a note back from the captain saying that he did not recall their meeting in Hereford on the day indicated in Mrs Parker's note. He said he did have a vague memory of meeting her somewhere, but it could not have been that day since he had been in his bed all morning recovering from a dinner party the night before.
When the two eventually met they discussed the morning's events in detail. They were able to confirm the date and checked with the captain's housekeeper that he did not rise until late that morning. Mr and Mrs Parker were adamant that they had met with him and Mrs Parker recalled that she had even been touched by the captain, when he took her arm.
